5 Benefits of Reading the Bible

Bible Reading is a must for every Christian. Reading and believing in God’s word have lost of benefits. I know there are numerous gain from reading it.

But is it still important to read the Bible in our modern days? Most people believe and know that its God’s word, but don’t really read them.

I grew up knowing that it’s God’s word and its important to read daily. I’ve learn stories from the bible through Sunday school. But with life’s busyness and all things happening around, there are days that I missed reading His word. I am not happy nor proud for not reading it. I know, I need a plan and purposely do it so I can reap the benefits from it.

I remember the song “Read your bible, pray everyday”, I used to sing it when I was a child and I my kids know that song too. But its not always easy to follow through in reading God’s word everyday. There are so many hindrances around that keeps us away from reading, and not getting spiritual nourishment.

Bible Reading is for our spiritual nourishment. Like food is for our physical bodies, God’s word is for our spiritual growth. We need to read the scripture to know more about our God and to be healthy and strong in our life’s journey.

Below, I have listed 5 great benefits that you can get from reading the Bible. There are many, many more benefits that can be added to my list but I just put 5 of them.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Psalm 119:105

BENEFITS OF READING THE BIBLE

  1. WE LEARN

As we read the bible and meditate on it, we know and learn more about our God, ourselves and our need for Him. We get deeper understanding of who He is, what He’s done and our need for Him. We acquire knowledge of how much God loves us and how He longs to connect with us.

We can read and know so many stories from God’s word about people who come before us, how they live, and how we can learn from their lives. We gain wisdom from reading and it helps us to navigate through life.

There are so many lessons we can learn from reading God’s word, His promises, about our life, our journey, life after death, heaven and so many more.

We won’t learn and understand more of God, if we neglect reading His word.

Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Philippians 4:9

2. WE ARE GUIDED

Many people called the Bible “moral compass”, that serves as the instruction manual for mankind.

As we read it, we learn what is good and bad, which is right and which is wrong. The bible is filled with truth and authority, truth that we have to know so we can follow God.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

2 Timothy 3:16

If anyone of us wants to live a good and normal life, the Bible is the how-to book that we have to read and follow. It will guide us to the right path in life.

3. WE ARE CHANGED

I know in my heart that there are things that needs changing in my life. My habits, attitudes and motives in life, and so many more.

And as I read God’s word, God speaks to my heart, and the Holy Spirit convicts me of what I have to change in my life. As a Christian my goal is to be more like Jesus, I know all of us wants to be like Him. And we can be more like Him each day if we spend time reading His word. When we read, meditate and listen from God’s word, He moved us and changed us.

We have our own plans, but God has the perfect plan for us. If we listen to His words, we changed from our own plans and desires and we follow God’s plan. We grow and we’re changed to be more like Jesus.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20

4. WE ARE EQUIPPED

God provides whatever we need for our assigned purpose. As Christians, our calling and purpose in the will of God is to do good works.

He supplies whatever is necessary for us to do our task.
And to do His will, his words equipped us, prepares, and enables us “in every good work to do His will.”

When we keep on reading God’s word, we’re fit and prepare to go on to battle. We have the Sword of the Spirit, to be able to fight and defeat the works of the enemy.

Equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Hebrews 13:21

Since the Lord is the one who equipped us, we must daily read His word and pray so we can be ready to perform His will.

5. WE HOPED FOR ETERNITY

There are so many things that happens around us that we can’t help but worry and be afraid. Sometimes it looks like there is no hope for us, no peace for the world and that there is no future.

But if we look into the word of God, there is hope in Jesus. That all our troubles, hardship and pain will not last forever. That there is a place God prepared for us with Him forever.

As we keep reading God’s word, our faith grows stronger and our hope gets brighter each day. We know that earth is not final home, we are not “earthlings”, we are “heavenlings”. Heaven is our home, our final destination. A place where there is no more sorrow, no pain, and no more crying. What a glorious place, a place that we are all look forward, our home.

If hopelessness is getting into you, read God’s word. Be reminded of God’s promises, His faithfulness and His great love for you.

“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.”

2 Corinthians 4:17-18

There are so many more benefits that we can get from reading the Bible. Let’s continue reading it each day, so we can keep on growing, changing to be more like Jesus.
