Rice is a staple food around most houses. Most specially on Filipino houses. When I was growing up, i always see those nice growing rice plants on the fields. It makes me feel so peaceful to watch them sway in the breeze of the wind.
I love eating rice, well back home we eat rice on every meal. Rice for breakfast, lunch and rice for supper. And if there is a snack time after school, i still eat rice. I’ve eaten a lot of rice in my life.
Half of the world’s population rely on rice as a daily staple food and is considered one of the most important crops in the world.
Who doesn’t like to eat rice, besides being easy to cook. It smells so good when you’re cooking it and its so floppy and soft when you eat it. Not all rice because i tried other kind of rice and some of them are hard when its cooked.
There are various kinds of rice in the supermarket, there’s brown or white and some are long grain and all of the other kinds. You can shop around for various kinds and brands, but at home we cook Jasmin Rice.
I learned to cook rice at an early age(most Filipinos do). Very easy to cook, just rice, water and pot and the heat source of course. When I was younger, we use to cook it on a ceramic and aluminum pots. And eventually used electric rice cooker. Its so easy to cook it on the rice cooker, much easier. And that’s what we’ve been using until now.
THE DANGER IN YOUR RICE COOKER
How can rice cooker be toxic?
Many rice cookers have an inner pot made of aluminum coated with non-stick Teflon. This non-stick coating is used for preventing rice from sticking to the pot. However, if non-stick Teflon is scratched, the pot can release dangerous chemicals. Teflon is safe if it is not scratched or overheated. Teflon becomes a problem if it is exposed to the temperatures exceeding 500 °F. However, Rice cooker cooks rice around the boiling point (212 °F). Therefore, there is a no concern with Teflon being overheated.
Teflon, on the other hand, is easily scratched with metal utensils. If teflon gets scratched, aluminum will leach out of the pot into food. That’s what happened to our rice cooker before. All scratched out on the inside.
When aluminum enters our body, it accumulates in our brain, kidneys, lungs, thyroid and liver. Some studies show that elevated aluminum content has been found in the brains of persons with Alzheimer’s disease.
Teflon can also leach other toxic chemicals if it is scratched or overheated. Teflon nonstick coating is coated with a material called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was made with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in the past. However, due to its toxicity to cause liver disease, thyroid disorders and testicular cancer, it was replaced with another chemical called Gen X. However, Gen X is supposedly just as toxic as PFOA. In addition, for some PTFE, PFOA is still used. Therefore, teflon is toxic and it should be avoided.
SAFE ALTERNATIVE MATERIAL TO NON-STICK TEFLON COATED ALUMINUM
