BLUE BAG RECYCLING PROGRAM

I don’t care about waste before.

Why should I bother to buy those blue bags.

Why should I even wash the bottles, jars and tin cans that I use in the kitchen.

Why do I have to segregate the trash at home.

My thinking before was, waste is waste. You put them all in the garbage bin, throw it away. That’s it.

But now I think differently.

I care about what happened to the trash I made, and what happens to them after I threw them away.

Are they really away or I just added more trash in the Landfill.

(I have blog about landfill before and how they work.)

For any area that you are in, I am sure there is a waste management that your community is doing.

In Edmonton, we have a blue bag recycling program.

Blue Bag collection of household recyclables are given to Single-family homes, duplexes, fourplexes .I think apartments have garbage bins outside of their building for regular garbage and for recycling.

You just place your clean recyclables loosely into blue see-through plastic bags and set them out for collection on your scheduled collection days.   You don’t need to sort them.

You can get blue bags on any grocery or hardware stores. The city of government does not sell them. Blue bags are for the recyclable items. So don’t put your recyclable trash on green or black bag because they will be collected as regular garbage.

Recyclable trash are collected at the same day regular garbage are collected.

After they are collected they are taken to Edmonton’s Material Recovery Facility. In there, trash are sorted and baled for market. Those materials are sold throughout Alberta, BC, the Western US and Asia.

If you don’t know what goes on the blue bag, check the picture or check what you have at home. Or call the city of edmonton @ 311 or visit the edmonton.ca

Please get involved in this blue garbage bag program if you haven’t.

Let’s all do our part and support our city.

Some trash can be drop off at recycling depots. Other things that can be reuse can be donated to the Reuse Center.

Let’s all do our part and make a difference.
