Christmas…why its the most wasteful time of the year

C H R I S T M A S

Most people considered that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year – but it is also the most wasteful time of the year.

Have you thought about the impact of all the spending and all the waste that we create during holidays and the damage it brings to our environment.

Most of us have too much stuff already, but then we spend more (money that we don’t have) to buy stuff we often don’t need or want. Christmas became the time of excessive consumerism. Our spending rises dramatically during this time and sales encourages us to buy more and more. We tend to spend too much on presents and food. Holiday season generate more waste than any other time of the year.

I think most people lost the real concept of Christmas. It becomes about SALES, presents, lots of foods, overcrowded mall, parties and maxed out credit card.

We forgot to celebrate the real meaning of Christmas. We forgot to reflect and appreciate its significance. Christmas is about time – time spent with friends and family, time to relax and reflect about Christ, about Gods love.

Not only the festive season drain our bank balance but also damage the environment. With the excessive spending and consumerism comes excessive waste.

According to studies:

  • On Christmas Day more than 125,000 tons of plastic is binned
  • Retail returns will end up in the landfill amounting to nearly $6.5 billion
  • 1 billion cards end up in the bin – enough to stretch around the world five times
  • The amount of wrapping papers used for presents is the equivalent of 50,000 trees
  • only 1.2 million christmas trees will be recycled from 6 million trees that people purchased
  • 2 million turkeys are thrown away and up to 40% of festive food goes to waste
  • 41% of the toys children receive will be broken and will end up in the landfill within three months

We spend, spend and spend more on things that create massive waste. Waste that hurt our environment, we might not be thinking about it. But if we become considerate of our environment we will make a change next holiday season.

Plan to be more eco-friendly and always consider our environment.
