Unlocking Scripture with the SOAP Bible Study Method

The SOAP method is a popular Bible study technique that stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a simple, structured way to interact with Scripture, understand its meaning, and apply it to daily life. Here’s how to use the SOAP Bible study method:

  1. Scripture:
    • Start by selecting a passage of the Bible you wish to study.
    • Read the passage slowly and carefully.
    • Write down a specific verse or a few verses that stood out to you during your reading.
  2. Observation:
    • Reflect on what you’ve read.
    • Write down what you notice about the Scripture. This can be details about the context, repeated words, the behavior or actions of characters, the nature of God revealed, etc.
    • Ask questions like:
      • What is happening in this passage?
      • Who are the main characters?
      • What is the main message or theme?
      • Are there any promises, commands, or principles in this passage?
  3. Application:
    • This is where the Scripture becomes personal.
    • Consider how the truths and lessons from the Scripture passage apply to your own life.
    • Ask questions like:
      • How can I live differently based on what I’ve read?
      • What is God asking me to do in light of this Scripture?
      • How does this Scripture challenge or affirm beliefs or behaviors in my life?
    • Write down specific actions or changes you plan to make based on your insights.
  4. Prayer:
    • Finish your study time in prayer.
    • Communicate with God about what you’ve learned and how you plan to apply it.
    • Ask for guidance, wisdom, and strength to live out the Scripture.
    • Praise and thank Him for His Word and the insights you’ve gained from it.
    • If there were any questions or confusions from the passage, bring them before God in prayer, asking for clarity or understanding.

The SOAP method can be used for individual Bible study, but it can also be beneficial in group settings where each member shares their findings and applications. The process can be done daily, or at any frequency that suits your personal study habits.

Remember, the goal of the SOAP method is to allow Scripture to speak to you personally and to transform your life. It’s a tool to facilitate deep reflection and application of the Word of God.
