What are Dryer Balls for?

I’ve been using dryer balls for few years now. But what really are dryer balls and what are they for? Do they really work?

Dryer balls are sets of balls, either wool or spiky plastic, used to help soften fabrics without chemicals in a tumble clothes dryer. -Wikepedia-

Drying clothes naturally outside under the sun on summer or on drying racks on winter are always better. It can save as money and conserve energy. You can build a clothes line indoor too, to save electricity on drying clothes. A clothes line or washing line is any type of rope, cord, or twine that has been stretched between two points (e.g. two sticks), outside or indoors, above the level of the ground. Clothing that has recently been washed is hung along the line to dry, using clothespegs or clothespins.

But with all the busyness of all people, we always prefer to use our dryer. It saves us time, just load our clothes then push the button. But there is an option that is more beneficial to our health.

Now for drying clothes, wool dryer balls can make a difference.

WHY USE DRYER BALLS?

  • Dryer balls decrease drying time by 30 to 50 per cent, saving energy and money, depending on the make and model of your dryer.
  • It helps decreased wrinkles , meaning less time ironing your clothes.
  • It reduces static on your clothes.
  • Its safe for people with sensitive skin (works well with cloth diapers)
  • You will avoid harmful chemicals from dryer sheets and fabric softener if you switch to dryer balls.

HOW TO USE DRYER BALLS?

  • Just put wool balls in the dryer with your clothes.
  • For light load use 3-4 balls, for full load use 6-8 balls.
  • Try adding 3-4 drops of essential oils per ball to scent your clothes.
  • Turn on dryer and run normally. Do not use dryer sheet or fabric softener.
  • Store them on well ventilated area when not in use (not on plastics).

DO DRYER BALLS REALLY WORK?

Fabrics stick together in the dryer, slowing down the drying process. But when you use dryer balls into your clothes dryer the balls will get in-between the towels and clothing. The balls will separate and pull them apart with their weight. More hot air will circulate and heat up laundry quickly and dry up clothes.

DRYER BALLS VS. DRYER SHEETS

Mostly all of us uses dryer sheets, they are cheaper to buy and smells so good. But did you know that they are full of harmful chemicals that are bad for our health. Toxic chemicals adhere to the clothes, vent into the air and rub off on our skin.

I ditched the dryer sheets few years ago, and used the dryer balls instead. Try switching to wool dryer balls to be safe from harmful chemicals from the dryer sheets. By doing so, your saving yourself and saving the environment as well. You can live without it.
